Collage
I taught this lesson to Art II — high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Students experimented with different collage techniques, including juxtaposition, decollage, monoprinting, drawing in elements, and using alternative forms of attachment. Students then brainstormed and sketched three ideas for a final composition, considering which techniques they might like to use and what message or “vibe” they wanted to communicate. Students had a week and a half of studio days to create their collages.
This lesson was designed by my cooperating teacher, Megan Newton. She was an incredible resource for this lesson, as well as the other units I taught in her classroom. This lesson provided an excellent opportunity for students to stretch outside of their comfort zones and work with non-realistic subject matter. This was also a really wonderful opportunity to see some of the students’ interests and individual styles emerge!
