Color Reduction Landscapes
I taught this lesson to Art II — high school sophomores, juniors and seniors.
Students learned how to communicate fore-, mid-, and background + atmospheric perspective through printmaking. Students chose a landscape or drew their own, then chose three colors — one for each ground. Then students alternated between carving into styrofoam plates to reduce their printing surface and printing each colored layer to build up their landscape. Some students added details in marker to finish off their prints.
This project was a huge undertaking! Students really enjoyed the reveal as their prints built up, and it was an excellent learning experience for all of us together as I figured out how to teach the complex concept of color reduction without ideal materials.
