Pop Art

I taught this lesson to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors in Art 1 (introductory 2D) classes. This was one of four lessons that were pre-determined based on a foundation curriculum that all the Art 1 teachers were expected to follow. I haven’t attached the lesson plan because I don’t feel that it’s mine to share, but it was a great learning experience for me as well as my students!

We started by choosing a cartoon character or characters that interested us, then practiced using a gridding method to draw the characters on a larger scale (usually sized up from 4x4 to 12x12). We then explored the history of pop art briefly and looked specifically at the use of Ben-day dots. Students then colored in their characters and designed backgrounds, using ben-day dots to fill al least fifty percent of the composition! It was really entertaining to see the students’ personalities come out in their choice of characters!
