Visualizing the Future

I taught this lesson with two mixed-level high school classes. We began with oil pastel stations to learn new techniques. We spent our second day talking about our visions for the future and how cultural and social influences can shape what we want for ourselves. On the third day, we brainstormed together to come up with collective and non-materialistic hopes for the future. Students then brainstormed individually and spent the following week creating their compositions showing their vision for the future in oil pastel. We spent the last day of the unit doing a gallery walk and small-group critiques of students’ final compositions.

I thoroughly enjoyed teaching this lesson. It created a great opportunity for me to get to know my students better and for students to share their hopes, manifest positivity, and expand their technical skills in oil pastel!
