Zendoodles

I taught this lesson to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors in Art 1 (introductory 2D) classes. This was one of four lessons that were pre-determined based on a foundation curriculum that all the Art 1 teachers were expected to follow. I haven’t attached the lesson plan because I don’t feel that it’s mine to share, but it was a great learning experience for me as well as my students!

We started be exploring the history and mindfulness practice of zen doodles, as well as the principles of variety and balance by looking at different pattern examples. We jumped right into experimenting with different patterns, working on embracing mistakes along the way. We then spent a day experimenting with watercolor, watercolor pencils, and oil pastel sgraffito. After getting a feel for the materials, students used one of the new techniques to add some color and additional variety and balance to their zen doodles!
