Caricatures
I taught this lesson to my Art Foundations classes - high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors.
This project was an excellent introduction to portraiture, and a great way to get students comfortable with drawing themselves in a way that felt a little silly. We looked at lots of examples of professional caricature artists and practiced different facial features before synthesizing them into a full caricature. We had about a week on this project in person, and finished our caricatures off remotely. I think we collectively enjoyed the meditative state of coloring as a group on our zoom sessions :)
This project was an awesome opportunity for us to learn more about one another and our interests. I felt that it also helped ease the students into the idea of drawing themselves with a project that felt a little lower-risk than a large, realistic graphite self-portrait.
